How to Use Slack in Virtual Events for Attendee Engagement

  • news articlesNews & Articles

Nearly everything you need to organize your virtual event exists within the Slack app.  Slack creates a centralized space to share news, updates, and policies. Channel creation is the vehicle that allows you to manage internal team communication, task management, attendee communication, event sessions, social media, presentations, polling, surveys, and more.  This list goes on and on!

Leave your email in the dust! Have real-time conversations- video messaging, direct messages and meetings can occur right inside your Slack event.   Create an information desk to share announcements, answer questions, and check in with attendees and event moderators.  Allow exhibitors and sponsors to create a channel where they can host a demo or start a video chat.

Slack has all the tools you need for attendee engagement, and numerous ways to include speakers, sponsors, and planning team are contained in your Slack event.  Set up and Intros channel #intros where presenters and attendees can add a brief bio and pin an example for folks to follow.  Create a #codeofconduct to set expectations on how participants should interact at the conference and within slack.  Pin guidelines and who to direct message in case of concerns.  Add a #slack-tips channel for sharing Slack best practices.

Slack is really all about keeping things tight!  Its native capability is pretty robust but once you integrate tools like Dropbox or Google Drive, Zoom or GoTo Meeting, Salesforce or Hubspot, or any of the 2,000 integrations available, you are truly cooking with gas!

It's all in there from who and how long, messages, responses, views, likes and more.  You will need a paid plan to track your member analytics but robust isn't quite enough to describe the data you'll be able to extract from Slack for your event.  Check out the data stack here Slack Analytics Stack

Let's not forget the fun!  Encourage teams to use themed backgrounds for Tacos with Hey Taco, Create a leaderboard. Create a game with the top trending hashtags integrating Twitter to encourage posting.  Have groups create a themed Spotify playlist during the conference with Jukebot.  In your #networking channel, display a GIF, and have attendees guess what hashtag is related.  Easily implement audience q & a and polling. There are so many ways to add fun to your virtual event and leave your attendees glad they came and talking about the event for weeks to come!

Event ROI

Utilizing an interactive tool like Slack that required zero onboarding or training to navigate and engage other participants in and of itself is priceless.  Add your ability to customize and integrate other business tools that the world is already using just scales your event's ROI and makes Slack a no-brainer for your next Virtual Conference or Hybrid Event.
